Eight Bachelor of Library and Information Science (BLIS) students from the Philippine Normal University successfully finished their on-the-job training under the first cycle of the Students’ Training Support (STrainS) program of the Department of Agriculture–National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (DA-NFRDI).
An online closing program was held on April 14, 2026, to mark the culmination of the internship. During the event, the interns presented their outputs, shared the competencies they developed, and reflected on their overall experience.
The interns were assigned at the Library Section of the Training Division (TD), where they gained hands-on experience in managing information resources, organizing library collections, and assisting in the delivery of library services. Their immersion also provided them with a deeper appreciation of the vital role of information management in supporting fisheries research and development initiatives.
During the opening program, TD Chief Dr. Mudjekeewis Santos emphasized that even short-term engagements can lead to meaningful professional connections. He encouraged the students to build strong networks and maintain a positive work ethic as they prepare for their future careers.
“We are grateful for the opportunity to be part of this program, as it allowed us to apply what we have learned in school and gain new skills in a real work environment,” said Cielo Kathyrine Nuñez, one of the interns.
Meanwhile, PNU Internship Coordinator Carlo Gualvez highlighted that the partnership between PNU and NFRDI serves as an important platform for experiential learning. He expressed hope that the collaboration would continue and expand in the coming years to benefit more students in the field of library and information science.
STrainS offers internship opportunities for high school and college students across the Philippines who wish to gain training experience from the institute. ### (Joey Caser)
