Dr. Mudjekeewis Santos, Career Scientist V and chief of the Training Division of the Department of Agriculture-National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (DA-NFRDI), was recognized for excellence in science communication during the Science, Technology and Society Summit 2026 held at University of Santo Tomas on March 25, 2026.

The award cited Dr. Santos’ impactful contributions in translating complex scientific findings into clear, accessible knowledge for the Philippine fisheries sector. His work in aquatic ecosystems and fisheries research has helped bridge the gap between science and the public, making research more relevant to policymakers, local government units, fisherfolk, and other stakeholders.

During the summit’s panel discussions, Santos emphasized the importance of making science understandable, relatable, and responsive to the needs of intended audiences. Drawing from his experience addressing the 2011 sardine shortage in Zamboanga through data-driven research, he underscored the need for scientists to adopt a “What’s in it for them?” mindset in communicating scientific outputs.

He also highlighted the importance of inclusive and public-oriented communication of credible scientific findings to sustain engagement and encourage science-based solutions among fisheries stakeholders.

With the theme “Science: Sustainable Communities through Innovation, Environmental and Nature-based Solutions, and Circular Economy,” the summit underscored the critical role of communication in fostering public trust and engagement in science. The event convened experts and practitioners to discuss trends, challenges, and strategies to strengthen science communication in the Philippines.

The recognition affirms NFRDI’s commitment to advancing science communication as a vital tool for promoting research-based, sustainable solutions in the fisheries sector, strengthening stakeholder collaboration, and supporting national development goals. ### (John Paul Combalicer and Rhedyn Marck Delos Santos)
