The National Stock Assessment Program (NSAP) region 9 facilitated the fourth quarter online meeting of the Fisheries Management Area (FMA) 4 Scientific Advisory Group (SAG) chaired by Dr. Wilfredo Campos, on December 4, 2025.

Discussions centered on the review of Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Administrative Circular No. 255, s. 2014, which mandates the closed fishing season for sardines in the East Sulu Sea, Basilan Strait, and Sibuguey Bay.

The SAG examined the current status of sardine stocks, emphasizing sustainability concerns and identifying possible enhancements to existing management measures to help ensure the long-term viability of the resource.

The group also initiated preliminary planning for SAG activities in 2026. Key agenda items included setting priorities for upcoming stock assessments and identifying fisheries species that require focused research and management attention. These discussions aim to strengthen science-based decision-making amid evolving fisheries conditions.

The 4th quarter SAG meeting reaffirmed the commitment of NSAP and partner institutions to evidence-based fisheries management, underscoring the importance of collaboration among scientists, managers, and stakeholders in promoting the sustainable utilization of marine resources within FMA 4.

NSAP is a flagship program of NFRDI that provides science for fisheries management. Conducted in collaboration with BFAR regional offices, NSAP continues to play a critical role in promoting sustainable practices and ensuring that scientific evidence remains central to regional fisheries policymaking. ### (Celestina Revillas)
