Bryan Tanyag, a researcher from the Fisheries Postharvest Research and Development Division (FPHRDD) of the Department of Agriculture–National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (DA-NFRDI), has been recognized as one of the winners of the AOAC Southeast Asia Section (AOAC SEA) 2025 Student Award.
His study titled “Isolation, Characterization, and Antimicrobial Susceptibility of Vibrio parahaemolyticus from Seafood Collected in Wet Markets and Landing Sites in Region III (Central Luzon), Philippines” was presented during the 4th Annual AOAC SEA Conference held on October 28–29, 2025, in Bangkok, Thailand.
“In recognition of this work, I am deeply honored to receive my first international distinction. This recognition further strengthens my commitment to advancing food safety and antimicrobial resistance research,” Tanyag said.
Tanyag’s research, conducted in collaboration with the University of the Philippines Manila and NFRDI, focuses on monitoring Vibrio parahaemolyticus, a key pathogen capable of acquiring and spreading antibiotic resistance in aquaculture and marine environments.
“Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) remains a pressing challenge to public health and food security. Understanding the resistance patterns of Vibrio parahaemolyticus is essential to ensuring the safety and sustainability of seafood,” he added.
The AOAC SEA Student Award recognizes exceptional student research in food safety, food quality, and analytical science across Southeast Asia.
Tanyag was honored alongside two other outstanding young scientists from Singapore and Malaysia, whose works are shaping the future of food safety and quality in the region. ### (Rita dela Cruz)
