Seven BS Biology students completed their on-the-job training under the second cycle ofthe Students’ Training Support (STrainS) program of the Department of Agriculture–National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (DA-NFRDI).
The batch included five students from Isabela State University (ISU) assigned at the Capture Fisheries Research and Development Division (CFRDD), where they gained experience in reproductive biology of fishes and invertebrates, taxonomy, resource mapping, ichthyoplankton and phytoplankton assessments, and other field activities.
Meanwhile, two students from the University of Santo Tomas (UST) were deployed at the Integrated Research Laboratory (IRL) to train in proximate, nutrient, mineral, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) analyses, as well as routine laboratory procedures.
A closing program was held on July 31, 2025, at the NFRDI Conference Room to mark the culmination of the internship. Interns presented the skills and knowledge they acquired, along with their personal reflections on their experience.
“This experience allowed us to gain valuable hands-on training in both laboratory and field work. We are inspired by the wide range of opportunities available for future biologists to apply our learning and expertise,” said Haidee Tobias, an intern from ISU, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to be part of the program.
Valeriano Borja, on behalf of CFRDD Chief Elsa Furio, expressed hope that the internship not only enhanced the students’ technical skills but also deepened their appreciation for research and marine conservation. He encouraged them to build on these experiences as a foundation and springboard for future achievements.
NFRDI’s STrainS program aims to equip students with real-world research and laboratory experience to complement their academic learning and prepare them for careers in fisheries. ### (Joey Caser)
