Dr. Mary Nia Santos and Dr. Janelle Laura Gacad, two Filipino scientists under the Department of Science and Technology’s (DOST) Balik Scientist Program (BSP), who were both hosted by NFRDI, shared the results of their respective research engagements during an exit report presentation held on April 8, 2025, at the NFRDI Conference Room in Quezon City.
Dr. Santos, a long-term Balik Scientist Awardee (Feb. 2022-Feb. 2025) whose work focused on “Innovative Approaches for Shrimp Disease Management,” presented the highlights of her three-year engagement. Her contributions included assisting various research projects, conducting trainings and workshops, and establishing networks with local and international institutions to address critical issues such as shrimp viral diseases and tilapia feed development. As part of her outputs, she published nine journal articles, covering topics ranging from the genetics of aquatic pathogens to microbial technology.
Meanwhile, Dr. Gacad, a short-term Balik Scientist Awardee (July 2024-January 2025), shared the progress of her research titled “Environmental DNA-qPCR Assay for Detection and Quantification of Trematode Species in Tropical Freshwater Ecosystems.” Her study applies molecular techniques to monitor parasitic threats in aquatic environments, focusing on the ecology and cercarial production of trematodes in the Cagayan River, in support of freshwater biodiversity and public health. During her engagement, she conducted seminars on parasitology and molecular techniques, authored several peer-reviewed journal publications, and developed manuals and training modules.
In her opening remarks, Dr. Maria Theresa Mutia, officer-in-charge of NFRDI, emphasized the impact of the BSP on achieving the institute’s vision.
“Natutuwa po kami na may ganitong programa dahil ang isa pong layunin ng NFRDI ay maging leader sa fisheries research. At para maging leader, kailangan din natin ng mga leaders na scientist. Salamat po sa DOST, and we hope to have a continued partnership with this Balik Scientist Program,” Dr. Mutia said.
Speaking on behalf of Dr. Fezoil Luz Decena, director of the Institution Development Division (IDD) of Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD), Dr. Jesselle Laranas, Senior Science Research Specialist, commended both Dr. Gacad and Dr. Santos for their contributions.
“We are always proud to say na ang aming mga Balik Scientist Awardees are really those who have trained and are bringing back their expertise here in the Philippines,” she said. She also acknowledged NFRDI for its consistent support as a host institution.
Following the report presentations, an impressions segment and open forum provided an opportunity for attendees to engage the scientists in discussions on the implications of their research findings, the challenges encountered, and potential future collaborations through the BSP.
During the discussion, both scientists highlighted the urgent need to upgrade laboratory facilities and equipment, as well as to establish a national aquatic disease monitoring system. They also underscored the importance of strengthening public-private partnerships, supporting the commercialization of research outputs, and increasing funding for research programs to drive innovation in the fisheries and aquatic sciences sector.
The event was attended by NFRDI staff and division chiefs, along with representatives from DOST-PCAARRD, including Supervising Science Research Specialist Virna Salac.
The Balik Scientist Program is a DOST initiative that encourages Filipino scientists, technologists, and experts to return to the Philippines and share their expertise. It aims to promote knowledge exchange and facilitate the transfer of new technologies by strengthening the country’s scientific and technological workforce across the academic, public, and private sectors. ### (Ann Dominique del Valle)
