Experts from the Fisheries Management Area (FMA) 6 Scientific Advisory Group (SAG) developed harvest strategies for lizardfish (Saurida tumbil) and fusilier (Pterocaesio tile), which are vital species to the marine ecosystem and the local fisheries industry in FMA 6 in a workshop held on January 30-31, 2025, in Baguio City.

In attendance were 50 participants from the DA-National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI); DA-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Regional Offices (CAR, NCR, I, and III); selected staff from the National Stock Assessment Program (NSAP) Regional Field Offices (RFO); and members of the FMA 6 SAG.

Representing NFRDI were Francisco Torres, Jr., NSAP program co-leader and FishCRRM 1.1 focal person; Nicko Amor Flores, NSAP focal and FishCRRM member; and Stephen Karol Riñon, NSAP technical staff.

The two-day workshop was structured to develop targeted harvest strategies for key fish species in FMA 6.

On the first day, discussions focused on lizardfish, with Maureen Noces, assistant project leader of NSAP RFO I, presenting stock assessment results that highlighted trends in biomass, fishing pressure, and overall stock health. This was followed by a deliberation on proposed Harvest Control Rules (HCRs) and Harvest Control Measures (HCMs) specific to this demersal species.

The second day shifted to fusilier, a reef-associated small pelagic species. Experts analyzed stock data and participated in a plenary session to develop tailored management strategies.

The workshop concluded with the drafting of technical recommendations, outlining HCRs and HCMs to ensure the sustainable harvesting of both species.

The workshop was attended by key fisheries officials and experts. Marx Perfecto Garcia, representing BFAR CAR Director Lois June Fermin and BFAR 3 Director Wilfredo Cruz, delivered the welcome message. Dr. Romina Yutuc, SAG Chairperson, presided over the meeting, ensuring productive discussions on fisheries management. Closing the event, Professor Francis Albert Argente, SAG vice-chairperson, emphasized the importance of science-driven strategies in sustaining the health and productivity of FMA 6 fisheries.

Through the development of science-based harvest strategies, FMA 6 strengthens its commitment to sustaining vital marine resources, ensuring ecological balance while supporting the livelihoods of coastal communities. ### (Stephen Karol Riñon)
