To enhance researchers’ ability to effectively communicate scientific knowledge to a broader audience and foster greater public understanding and appreciation of science through social media, Dr. Mudjekeewis Santos, Scientist V and Chief of the Training Division at the DA-National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI), served as one of the resource speakers at the “Training Workshop on S&T Communication through Social Media and Digital Broadcasting” held on August 29-30, 2024, in Davao City.
“One of the key benefits for researchers and scientists using social media is the ability to reach a broader audience when disseminating research results. Social media platforms allow researchers, like myself, to share findings widely, provide real-time updates on ongoing projects, and promote upcoming publications to a more diverse and extensive audience,” said Dr. Santos.
In addition to explaining the “why,” he also discussed the benefits and opportunities of using social media, introduced the differences among various platforms, including their strengths and weaknesses, and offered guidance on choosing the right platform for specific goals.
He also emphasized how some social media platforms have become essential for scholarly communication and measuring societal impact. “To amplify the work of researchers, reach broader audiences, and foster collaborative opportunities beyond borders, we need social media as an avenue,” he added.
The two-day training featured other renowned science communicators from Science Communicator Philippines, including Dr. Rogel Sese and Timothy James Dimacali. They covered topics such as understanding S&T communication, crafting effective science articles, visual communication of science, ethics in science communication, and creating an effective online presence. ### (Rita dela Cruz)
