The Department of Agriculture (DA), through the National Fisheries Research and Development Center (NFRDI) and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources-National Seaweeds Technology Center (BFAR-NSTC), distributed laboratory-grown seaweeds (Kappaphycus alvarezii) propagules to two farmer associations on March 3, 2022 in Calauag, Quezon.

In collaboration with the local government unit (LGU) of Calauag, Quezon, the propagules were given to Pinagsanib na Samahan ng Mangingisda at Magsi-seaweed ng Lainglaingan; and Pag-ibayuhin ang Anak Lakas Dagat (PALAD). The first to receive was the Seaweed Farmers Association from Bacon, Sorsogon.

The distribution of propagules is one of outputs of the NFRDI-funded project titled, “Sea-based Nursery of Laboratory Grown Kappaphycus alvarezii Propagules.” It aims to develop protocols on sea-based nursery of K. alvarezii in a cage to ensure steady supply of good-quality propagules; and to capacitate seaweed farmers on the technology.

Ma. Salvacion R. Ferrer of NFRDI and Isabel M. Luna of  LGU-Calauag, Quezon led the distribution activity. The propagules were given to PALAD president Roberto D. Reambunanza and Pinagsanib na Samahan ng Mangingisda at Magsi-seaweed ng Lainglaingan member Israel G. Cabanela.

Also present were Calauag mayor Rosalina O. Visorde and OIC municipal agriculturist Maybel Espino. (MSFerrer, GJCalderon).
