The DA-NFRDI, in cooperation with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources-Region IVA (BFAR IVA), had promoted the technology on the use of bigger size milkfish fingerlings and extruded floating feeds to fisherfolk at Brgy. Walay, Padre Burgos, Quezon Province, on August 6, 2020. The collaborative R&D project between the agencies aims to determine the growth and survival performance of milkfish, cost efficiency of the technology, and socio-economic impact of the project to the fishing community.
To implement the project, 100,200 milkfish fingerlings and 189 bags of extruded floating feeds amounting to Php402,500 were given to the 32 fisherfolk, all members of the Ipil Action Group (IAG), a People’s Organization as the project cooperators. IAG President Lenardo dela Pena says, “We are very fortunate to be chosen as the beneficiary of the project and thankful to the government for the support in this time of crisis in the country.” Through these interventions, milkfish production is expected to increase, which will translate to higher income of fisherfolk and provide Filipino consumers with needed fish food amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.
