Experts Group Meeting Held
February 20, 2018. Quezon City. The Institute conducted a Small Group Expert Meeting at the NFRDI Conference Room today towards developing pro-active and timely research and development activities. The activity also tackled emerging issues on Aquaculture and come up with possible relevant R&Ds to provide scientific information as basis for management in providing relevant solutions.
Various R&D activities particularly related to shrimps, shellfishes, Tilapia, milkfish and seaweeds were proposed. The meeting also discusssed on how to strengthen the R&Ds of the Institute considering its limited manpower. One of the activities proposed were collaborative undertakings with the private sector, academe and other fisheries researching institutions such as the SEAFDEC/AQD. Major considerations in identifying R&D efforts were their alignment with the Philippine Development Plan (PDP) and the current Thrust of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR).
"The meeting is a needed shot in the arm for the NFRDI as this will be a venue to streamline R&D efforts of the Institute," said Director Drusila Esther E. Bayate, Interim Executive Director of the NFRDI. She also stressed the need for NFRDI to work with other research institutions to maximize R&D results.
Aside from the NFRDI- Aquaculture Research and Development Division headed by Ms. Ma. Salvacion R. Ferrer, Dr. Ma. Theresa Mutia, Chief- NFFRDC Taal, Dr. Ulysses Montojo, OIC-PHRDD/PPID, Ms. Nonita Cabacaba, OIC-NMFRDC Guiuan, and Ms. Celestina Jumawan, ACC-II NBFRDC joined the experts from aquaculture sector which include Mr. Norberto Chingcuanco, Regional Director Willy Cruz, BFAR RO3, Joseph Martin Borromeo, Lilian Rueca, Mr. Roy Ortega, Chief- BFAR Aquaculture Division and Mr. Dan Baliao, Chief, SEAFDEC/AQD.
